Project2 Publishing Forms

Brief

Since 2010 we have tipped the balance when it comes to published content and we entered the digital turn with more content published digitally than on paper. Today the act of “making [information] public”. So, explore more possibilities for publications, whether it’s traditional print publications or interactive e-books.

Among the many readings, I was assigned to the publication subject of William Wordsworth’s poetry. After in-depth research, combined with my own book creation and the emotional tone of poetry, I finally chose “emotion” as the theme of this book.

Project purpose

Make a publication of the poem “Resolution and Independence” by William Wordsworth, a famous British poet, with the knowledge of typesetting. The form of the publication is not limited, but the content of the publication is the poem itself.

Research about publishing forms

Through some online surveys, we’ve done some research on people who read, and we’ve come up with some pain points. The following are the main user groups and user needs.

User group

1, student

2, children

User purpose

Generally speaking, poetry is abstract and difficult to understand. Therefore, we hope that through this publication we can more easily and intuitively understand the poetry of William Wordsworth and the feelings that the author wants to express in the poetry.

Sketch

Before I formally designed the publication, I first read the entire poem collection, and selected the objects in the article, sorted them out and determined the emotional tone expressed by the poem.

After analyzing the emotional tone of the poem, I found that the emotional tone conveyed by this poem was romantic and full of optimistic emotions, so I drew this sketch and planned to describe my publication with emotions.

Outcomes

Finally, in the stage of producing the publication, I combined the text content with the patterns I drew to get the final result.

The theme of this book is “mood”, and I have used different colors and patterns on each page to represent the feelings expressed in the poetry content. This not only presents the author’s ideas well, but also makes it easier to convey the author’s ideas to the reader.

Reflection

In this assignment to produce a publication, I learned how important it is to connect the needs of the user with what the author wants to say. As a designer, we should not only consider the needs of the user, but also understand the feelings of the author. Use concrete means to express abstract emotions. I think this is the visual expression and communication of emotions. In addition, I also learned a lot about book binding, which was beyond my expectation.
